Ibu Rahayu: Paris 1999

Brothers and sisters, we don’t feel it, or realize it, but Subud, or Susila Budhi Dharma, is more than half a century old. In reality, although in some places or countries there are few members, or few people opened or who do latihan, the truth is that, although we don’t realize it, Subud has made visible progress that can be felt by the outside world. For this reason, as Subud members we need to be conscious that we must strike a balance between the growth of our soul and our progress in the world. Because this latihan is a training of the soul that has no end and there is no level at which we can claim we have done enough latihan. This is because our spiritual growth passes through different processes, which in order, are: purification, the process of growth, and finally the preparation of a person’s self. Why is this? It’s because from the time of our birth and even before our birth, from childhood through adulthood, we are never free from the influences and ties that give us our human form. And we are unaware that many of these influences are not our own, and they cover up or close off the … Continue reading

Strengthening Our Heart Connection in Tucson

Although it was unseasonably cold and the swimming pool was for polar bears, there was much warmth at the regional gathering. Some 50 Subudians came from various nooks and crannies of our Rocky Mountain Region as well as from places further afield. The gathering was ably and generously hosted by the Tucson group with particular thanks to Lewis Olds and Vernon Contessa for organizing the venue and registration. This is an enormous job and they did it well. The over-arching focus and intention for this gathering was to strengthen our heart connections, experience each other as spiritual pilgrims, and to interact and share deeply. The theme arose out of feedback from the last gathering, and Helper testing. Roland Evans, assisted by Cedar Barstow, put together a more spacious schedule of activities and time frames based on feedback that the last gathering was too crowded and rushed. Kenneth Clarke (National Helper) confirmed that at the national level, there is interest in exploring more about our connections with each other—the “God beside us” aspect of Subud life and practice. This horizontal aspect of human connection is how we put into practice our vertical relationship with God in the latihan. On Friday evening, … Continue reading

Guidelines for Group Sharing

Sharing our experiences in small groups fosters a sense of connection and compassion. It helps us understand and appreciate each other as fellow human being on the Subud spiritual path. A well-formed group becomes a sacred space—an opportunity for God’s grace and guidance to be present. Not everyone feels comfortable sharing his/her own intimate feelings. Inner experiences are hard to put into words and can easily be misunderstood. For true openness to happen, a group has to feel safe, accepting and cohesive. Below are suggestions that are helpful in promoting real sharing. Group Framework The following group framework creates the probability that members will feel able and willing to share their experiences. The group should have: Around 6 members with a designated coordinator(s) A comfortable, private space with members sitting in a circle Space and time for every member to speak and share A focus on recent, important and personal experience—not opinions One person speaking at a time with no distractions, side talk or discussion An attitude of respect and courtesy for each other Each person taking responsibility for what they say, using “I” statements Questions asked to clarify and help understanding—not change the subject No pressure or need to … Continue reading
